The most common reason a small business doesn’t update its website: “Our clients come through referrals anyway.” True. But what happens after the referral? The person picks up their phone and googles your company name.
If they find a 2014-era design that doesn’t fit a phone screen, or nothing at all, the referral cools. If they find a clear, fast, trustworthy site, they reach you already half-convinced.
1. Your website is your first meeting
Most of the time your first contact with a client isn’t a handshake, it’s a website visit. In a couple of seconds, people decide whether you’re credible, current and interested in their problem.
A good site answers three questions straight away: what you do, who it’s for and what the next step is. The design doesn’t have to be expensive, but it has to be deliberate. A slow, confusing or broken site tells a client your service might be the same.
2. It works while you sleep
Your website is the only employee who answers questions at 2 a.m. A well-built site:
- answers recurring questions (prices, process, timeline) so you don’t repeat them on every call;
- collects enquiries through a form with the details you need, not just “call me back”;
- shows you what’s really happening: which services draw interest, where visitors come from and where they leave.
That last one is especially valuable. You see what clients actually care about instead of guessing.
3. Trust and visibility go hand in hand
A company without a proper website feels out of date, even when the work itself is excellent. Client feedback, examples of past work and clear contact details are social proof that a social media profile can’t convey as well.
Your website is also the only channel you truly own. A social media algorithm can change tomorrow, but a search-optimised site keeps bringing in new clients for years, including the ones who don’t know anyone to refer them.
What makes a website “professional”?
- It loads in under two seconds on a phone.
- The first screen says what you do and for whom.
- It shows real work and real clients’ words.
- It makes getting in touch easy.
- It’s secure and maintained, not “built and forgotten”.
If your current site doesn’t pass this list, see how I build websites, or tell me in a couple of sentences what your business does. I’ll tell you what I’d change first.
